Visual Thinking evaluation...

ALPHABET SOUP Pt.1

What is being communicated and how?

A visual interpretation of the verb 'Build' is being communicated over a set of ten letter forms. These letters have been cropped back, chopped up and rounded off, coming together in an 'Air fix' style fascia.

How well does this answer the brief?

Thinking about the initial stages of a 'build' it is necessary to start from scratch with specific parts and materials. Nothing suggests 'build me' more than air fix model kits, therefore I feel it answers the brief particularly well.

How well has the idea been visually explored?

My idea stemmed from looking at sections of letters, taking shapes I had sketched up from previous ideas and manipulating them to fit the next. At first I looked at using personalised typefaces before coming to realise existing type would work better as a starting point. After splitting up and removing parts of the type up it was a case of arranging it to produce a simple but completely legible visual.

What are the strengths of the resolution?

The progression of my final idea came together quite well, ending up with a very strong visual. The typeface produced works extremely well as a set and could easily transpire into a full alphabet, moving on to look at further glyphs and punctuation marks.

How could it be improved?

An improvement for me would be to begin distorting the letters further, maybe creating more sections, all the time thinking about legibility and the boundaries set within and outside.
I would like to see these forms maybe laser cut and produced as a 'faux' product.
