When it came down to thinking about areas and clientele that graphic design infiltrates, the list consumed most areas of many everyday lives. The one client group I’m ambitious about graphically is the fashion industry, more specifically the promotion and communication of their products. Fashion is a very fast moving industry, constantly searching for high-impact visual communication, working at a fast pace is a skill we have become accustomed to on this course, delivering our product to the needs of a brief regardless of time constraints.
Not to say I’m the most fashion conscious individual, I do have an interest in certain areas of the subject. What really attracts me about the industry is the higher-end graphics, although I can’t pigeonhole the specific area I’d like to design for, I love the combination of type and image that commonly occurs in publications, advertisements and display graphics. I’ve found it hard to direct myself in the direction of either type or image, through a love of both, an aspect I want to develop by committing to and expanding on each area.

It goes without saying the fashion industry is a very visual environment to be immersed in and as a graphic designer looking to approach this visual world, there are certain skills that would have a significant benefit. Photography plays a major role in capturing a ‘look’ or trend, a skill I would want to pay attention to in order to feel well-rounded enough as a creative to enter an enviroment and be able to offer as many skills as possible. We had a visit from Nick Bell, an ex-student from Nottingham and he said something that stuck in my head vividly, ‘do everything, if someone needs some photography, do it for them, if they need a set building, don’t turn it down’ (or something along those lines), but it really got me thinking about the products I have to offer as a graphic designer/creative individual and more importantly the ones I don’t have.
